The NFL Season that almost wasn't! Now that the NFL Lockout is behind us...all the men in America (and some women) can resume their lives knowing that Sundays and Mondays will be better. Beer sales in America will thrive, and everyone can fire up their wits for the standard inter-office Fantasy Football Banter. Since I am the only female this years Fantasy Football league I wanted to pay homage to all the females out there that genuinely love their sports...and not just for their men; but for themselves! As a late bloomer, I embraced sports, the mud, bruises, and rollerblades. In the 5th grade I became especially enamored with the 1994 hit movie "Little Giants"...enter; ICEBOX. Becky O'Neal aka ICEBOX was a rockstar tomboy and she did her thing. Rough around the edges, wanted to keep up with the boys- she was the 'IT' girl of my youth. There are so many young ladies that can relate to this. So with the buzz of the NFL lockout at bay, and Fantasy leagues gearing up- I circle back to what made me start this post to begin with; my Yahoo team name "ICEBOX"! To all the Tomboy girls out there, this is for you. Pictured below, fun youth bedrooms, and a touch of pink for the NFL...and the kicker...Icebox grew up just fine! ;)

A Pyrotechnic paradise?

With the official start to my favorite holiday underway, I wanted to take a minute to highlight all things patriotic for the 4th of July. The 4th has been my favorite holiday since I was young. Granted Christmas and Thanksgiving were a close second-- since I love mostly anything centered around food....but yes, 4th of July. As an East Coast-Jersey Girl-- with July, the weather is hot, the beaches are packed, the ocean temp is swimmable, the BBQ's are ablaze, and people are generally in great spirits; around spirits (and beer). Memorial Day is the launch of summer, but a tease in weather, and Labor Day is depressing since it's the endcap to summer; SO-- the 4th is the Perfect mid-point to summer to make you realize, that you only have two months left to do all the fun things that remain, or actually finish working on your summer fitness goals for the second leg of summer swimwear.

With family, friends and fireworks all welded around this extended weekend, I wanted to share some ideas for how to spark up your home with Red, White and Blues and also link some patriotic perches. These may be a little campy, country, or farmhousey for some-- but one thing that will never go out of style is the Americana style. With Red, White and Blue-- you cannot go wrong...These Colors Don't Bleed! Take Pride!

So drill and infuse those watermelons, chill the Jell-O, light the fires, kick the tires, but please do not send any at-home fireworks into the sky; leave that up to the pros! Saftey first! For the best fireworks check out any city harbor, waterfront, your township website, or the famed Macy's 'works. OR-- look upward wherever you are...because somebody, somewhere, is going to be skyrocketing and firing their home collection into the night air, and potentially causing trouble! Also, use taxis! The End.

Peacock, Stripes and Summer Dreams!

Well--I can't believe July is almost here. But it is. Soon we will be in our Festive Fourth attire, flagging our family and friends for finishing the sangria and actin' a fool. And after all of the alliteration there is just one more 'F'...feathers! If you take a look back to my bridal shower post, you will see I fancy feathers; peacock to be exact. I plot and hope to place these fine plumes as often as possible. I like the peacock as much as I love the aqua color family (also see prior posts). Just because I like, repetition, (and alliteration); doesn't mean that I lack creativity, but rather that it is familiar, soothes me, and I like to put my signature mark on it. Same with the hydrangeas and peonies. Elle Kay will position favored florals around until you think that Blair Waldorf might have been parading around in there.

But fear not- my jam packed board is a snippet of my ideas, and a snapshot of the things I love and find refreshing for summer! Pinks, yellows, whites and blues. Stripes, patterns, prints- bold hues. I adore the Crane & Co. and Kate Spade note-cards-- perfect for sending post to that lovely couple that had you over for supper. Perfectly picked paper and handwritten notes are the new texts and e-mails. For some things, the sentiment of a hand-written note can make all the difference. So I encourage you to channel your inner pen-pal, and school cursive/penmanship, and get those hands and minds ready! You never know when you'll need to drop a cute note in the mail. And stamps fun and festive as well. You can check out Zazzle.com if you are looking to personalize stamps for a special occasion or just because.

On the idea that color is queen, be it drapes, throw pillows or an amazing party dress- with July just around the corner; you better make a splash. My theory: embrace anything that has the juice to make a statement for summer. Live it up! "Life has a way of flying by faster than any old Summer Vacation!"

Summer Reading:

It has been a dream of mine to own a home that has an abundant library with a sliding ladder bookcase. Although I am guilty of not always finishing my books and starting many at a time, I do have a fine appreciation for literature and writing. From 'A Catcher in the Rye' to Bethenny Frankel- 'A Place of Yes' I welcome an array of authors into my home.

Since vintage books are so beautiful, I have cultivated a collection through the years. I have scoured the yard sales, markets and bookshoppes in my travels and most made exciting purchases ‘Judging a book by it’s cover.' Often I’ve chosen by color or texture alone to add to the allure and curiosity of my bookcase! In the world of print- imperfect is the new perfect. Torn pages or creased covers show that the book has been on a journey. And- since books should be displayed in a way that represents your taste and personality-- what better way than to cap them with some stylish bookends! There is something for everyone! Anchors, animals, vintage cars!

Since many of my readers (pun) are dropping coins on new books this summer for vacations, airplanes, or the beach, I wanted to reveal some helpful images and tips for keeping your library fresh- and gentleman, this does not include the lavatory!

So-- the Royal Wedding put us all in a hat tizzy, and now the Kentucky Derby is a furlong away. I am looking forward to seeing the gamut of hats on Millionaires Row this Saturday as I tune for another hopeful Calvin Borel victory in the 137th Kentucky Derby. Yes, with my Cuatro de Mayo birthday adjacent to the Derby, I’ve developed a loyalty to Mr. Borel, and and the payout sure has been sweet.

If you’ve paged through my website and photos you may see that I love all things Equine. (Horse) (Gold Wine rack, Horse bust trophy, 7 foot Horse statue lamp). Perhaps my childhood fantasy about owning a pretty pony have come to fruition in web form. Close enough. Either way, this blog post will Win, Place, Show on all things pony and will serve as my take on how the Kentucky Derby fashion could be translated into home decor. I’ve done a mash-up of past Derby luminaries and famous faces, and gave them interiors to match their ensemble. We can call this a hybrid home/fashion blog post.

The New Barbie Dream Home
After a bit of browsing I decided to match Hef and the ladies with the ‘real’ Malibu Barbie Mansion that Jonathan Adler designed for Mattel’s 50th Anniversary of Barbie back in 2009. Adler’s Happy Chic line is retro Warhol-esque and oh-so-fun. His decor may just be as lively as the former troop I’d place in it.

Every once in a while I, and you alike, stumble upon a blog and it taps into your head. You think, "I've totally thought this before!" Or-- "I've actually said that to someone!" Since I'm kept company by a Plotter Printer, and get to marvel at architectural plans most days, I have often wondered what would happen if accidentally sent my CVS Extra Care coupon or boarding pass to the plotter printer....
And so--- it took Mr. Bill Bryson of Alaska to cue it up and give us a laugh. There may have been others but this is the first I've seen. You go Bill!

Idea of the Month - Printing out your digital pics and framing them

As the calendar turns to March I have been feeling extremely blessed with great friends and my wonderful family. I am really lucky to have such amazing people in my life. With that in mind I decided to take some time to print my favorite pictures of them. Yes- print. In a digital world, everything is trapped in our cell phones, cameras, iPads -- and they hardly make it out into the print world. After choosing my best snaps, I went shopping for some amazing frames. I wanted, color, texture and detail. Now all of my favorite smiling faces are front in center in my home. What's better than that?

Spring

As much as I love pure snow and skiing during the winter- I am happy to report that Spring is just around the corner. The Garden State feels alive and well. With the revival of nature’s bounty, I find it most refreshing to put forth your best vase and favorite flowers front and center in your home! As Spring presents itself, I will be scouring the Farmers Markets for lush lilacs, tulips and other fine florals. Since Elle Kay loves blue paint, it was only fitting that we spotted this lovely home on HGTV. Baroque mirror, pillar candles, tufted bench, varieties of color and mix-matched patterns. Keep things visually engaging. I wonder if HGTV found my idea book because this room was already crafted! Eye spy the lilacs and tulips, do you?

Going Green in More Ways Than One

Not only are recycled goods, and organic accessories a recurring top trend, so are natural elements, and, the color Green. Find recycled coasters, use pinecones, dried flowers, gemstones, natural stones etc. Don’t forget to add some Green! 2010: The Year of the Tiger!

According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2010 is the Year of the Tiger! A stunning, regal, creature-- brave, proud and bold- a Tiger always shows their stripes! In other related news, Animal Prints have been hot on the home-front. Zebra, Tiger and leopard swatches have been showing up bedrooms and living rooms from the Suburbs to the City.

You can easily get on board with animal prints by adding a throw pillow or a simple rug to enhance your favorite space. We all know how Elle Kay loves the teal color family and animal prints. Ever since Apartment Therapy featured blogger Brooklyn Limestones apartment renovations I was hooked. Designing walk in closets, modern powder rooms and a beautiful home office. Check out the blues and zebra- a sanctuary! The only thing missing in that room is our adorable Cinderella Plaque.

A new spin on blue- both Masculine and Feminine- Hello Navy Blue!

I was picking out a paint scheme for a male client and I wanted something crisp, clean and sharp. Nothing too bright or nothing too dull. No boring Sahara neutrals...tan, taupe etc. And so I landed on a slick Navy blue, and a slate grey. These colors are classy and timeless. They are the new modern neutrals-- Here are some examples:

2011 means that homes don't have to be decorated "safe" and "subtle" anymore. Whites, earth tones and neutral colors, are timeless; but if you're decorating a room that you change often, by all means; add a splash of color!

Bright colors like orange, yellow and lime green are popping up in traditional homes across the US.

Orange crush and Pantone's aqua/teal, are juicy combination!

The old rules of design says to avoid symmetry, but symmetry just looks so good sometimes! And the hounds-tooth is always a crowd pleaser!

One of my favorite New York Designers- Jonathan Adler knows how to work the color wheel. I like it all!

How Do You Feel, About Teal?

For 2010 the color chief Pantone, Inc. announced the color of the year was teal; or more specifically Turquiose-(15-5519). With spa-like elements and visions of the Caribbean Sea; what's not to love? The hot color showed up everywhere from home interiors, to fashion and jewelery. Splash the color on the wall or add accent items like throw pillows or frames to make any room feel cozy and dream-like.
